Getting Connected

Getting connected…  That’s what all of this is supposed to be about.  Isn’t it?

It’s interesting how just a few short years ago, this thing called the “internet” was nothing more than a buzz-word for some sort of strange thing that happens when you have a modem and a computer.  Remember how slow those used to be?!?!  We’ve definitely come a LONG way!  Now, if you’re not online, blogging, catching up with your friends on facebook, myspace, linkedin or whatever other social network – you’re just not a “happenin’ kind of cat…”  How long has it been since you Googled yourself?

I wonder how we ever survived before we had these superpowers?

I remember the first website that I ever had.  It was for a band I was in called “Taste Of Madness”.  I remember how cool it was to own tasteofmadness.com – it was such an accomplishment!  Now, I own so many f#%!ing domains that I can hardly remember what they all are!  I wonder if I’ll ever do anything with half of them…

Now, it seems like everybody’s gearing towards this trend of “social media” – be it a blog, getting in touch with old friends on facebook or having the most connections on linkedin. It all seems so interesting.  It’s like we don’t even have to go outside or actually talk to people anymore…  In some ways, that nice.  In others, it definitely leaves a lot to be desired. I wonder how long it will take for our interpersonal skills to deterioriate so badly that we can’t even carry on a simple conversation.

Don’t get me wrong…  I am a total internet-junkie. But, I keep seeing all of these articles from www.choooseanydomain.com about how you should blog about this or that and you will be a captain of industry or the next Bill Gates.  It’s just like those “Get Rich In Real Estate” infomercials from the 90′s – WAY TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE!  Nevertheless, it seems like more and more people are trying it – and I notice more and more people scratching their heads and saying, “I think this is just a little bit over my head.”

Here’s the plain and simple truth…  Just be YOURSELF.

Can it really be that easy?  Why, YES – it can!  You see, we all have something to contribute to society.  So, why not contribute what you truly are?  I think that’s the real motivation towards the social media trend.  It it FINALLY giving us an opportunity to have truly satisfying relationships online with friends, family members or old classmates, colleagues and acquaintances.  I think that’s pretty cool!  So, the next time you’re struggling with what to write for your real estate, mortgage, internet or whatever type of blog – remember, keep it simple and be yourself.  The answers will come.
